How to Choose the Right Motor Oil

Walk into any parts store and the oil aisle is a wall of numbers and marketing words. Full synthetic. High mileage. Dexos approved. 5W-30. 0W-20. It feels like you need a chemistry degree to buy four litres of liquid. You do not. You need your owner manual and about ten minutes of reading.

Choosing the wrong oil rarely destroys an engine overnight. But using the wrong viscosity or skimping on spec approvals can shorten engine life, void warranty coverage, and cause problems in cold Windsor mornings or hot summer traffic on the E.C. Row. Here is how to choose with confidence.

Start With the Owner Manual

Your manual lists the recommended viscosity like 5W-30 or 0W-20, and any required industry specs. Follow that first. Automakers test engines with specific oil flow characteristics. Deviating without a good reason is guessing.

Some manuals list alternatives for certain climates or fuel types. A chart might show 0W-20 as preferred and 5W-30 as acceptable in warmer conditions. Read the footnotes. Turbocharged and direct-injection engines often have stricter requirements than older designs.

If you bought a used car with no manual, check the oil cap, door jamb sticker, or manufacturer website by VIN. Stickers under the hood sometimes repeat the grade. When in doubt, call a dealer parts desk with your VIN, they can confirm spec quickly.

What the Numbers on the Bottle Mean

Multi-grade oils use two numbers separated by a W. The first number with W describes cold-start flow. Lower numbers flow easier when the engine is cold. That matters every morning in Ontario from October through April.

The second number describes viscosity at operating temperature. Higher numbers are thicker when hot. Thicker is not automatically better protection. Too thick and oil cannot reach tight passages fast enough at startup. Too thin and protection under load can suffer.

Modern engines increasingly specify thin oils like 0W-20 for fuel economy and fast cold flow. Older engines might specify 5W-30 or 10W-30. Use what the engine was designed for unless a knowledgeable source gives you a documented reason to change.

Conventional, Synthetic Blend, and Full Synthetic

Conventional oil is refined petroleum. It works fine in many older, simple engines with shorter change intervals. It breaks down faster under heat and forms deposits more readily in tough conditions.

Full synthetic oil is engineered for consistent molecules and better high-temperature stability. It flows well when cold, resists breakdown when hot, and often allows longer drain intervals where the manufacturer approves them. Turbo engines, stop-start traffic, and towing benefit most.

Synthetic blend is a middle product better than conventional for many drivers, not always equal to full synthetic. High-mileage oils often include seal conditioners and may be conventional or synthetic blend. They can help older engines with minor seepage but are not magic leak stoppers.

API, ILSAC, and Manufacturer Approvals

Look for the API donut on the bottle. It shows service category currently SP for gasoline engines is common on newer products. Older cars might list SN or earlier letters. Using outdated categories on a new engine is a bad idea. Using newer oil in an old engine is usually fine if viscosity matches.

European and some domestic brands require manufacturer-specific approvals Mercedes-Benz, BMW, VW, GM Dexos, etc. These are not marketing stickers. They mean the oil passed tests for that company's engines. Turbocharged VWs and some GM products are picky. Wrong spec can mean sludge, consumption, or warranty denial.

Diesel engines need diesel-rated oil. Gasoline oil in a diesel is a mistake. The reverse also applies. Read the label for C-category diesel ratings if you drive a diesel truck or car.

How Often to Change Oil

Follow the maintenance schedule in your manual, not the quick-lube sticker. Many newer cars with synthetic oil go 8,000 to 12,000 kilometres between changes under normal driving. Severe service short trips, dust, towing, lots of idling shortens intervals.

Check the dipstick between changes. Oil should be readable on the stick, not foamy or milky. Milky oil can mean coolant contamination, a serious problem unrelated to brand choice.

DIY oil changes let you choose the exact oil and filter you want. You also inspect the drain plug, filter housing, and undercarriage while the car is up. That side benefit is one reason people learn to change oil first.

Common Myths Worth Ignoring

Thicker oil is not automatically better for high-mileage engines. Extra thickness can starve upper engine components at startup. Fix worn engines mechanically; do not band-aid with random grades.

Brand loyalty matters less than spec compliance. Major brands that meet required ratings are fine. Mystery oil at a discount store with no clear spec listing is not worth the gamble.

You cannot judge oil health by colour alone. Dark oil can still be doing its job. Testing or following interval discipline beats eyeballing.

Filters Matter Too

Oil and filter work as a pair. A quality filter captures contaminants without restricting flow. Cheap filters can crush, bypass, or leak. Match filter quality to oil quality. For a synthetic interval, use a filter rated for that interval.

Some cartridges require special tools. Spin-on filters need a wrench and a light coating of oil on the gasket before installation. Torque hand-tight plus a quarter turn is common, check filter instructions. Double-gasketing because the old ring stuck to the block causes memorable leaks.

Putting It Together at the Parts Counter

Step one: find required viscosity. Step two: confirm API or manufacturer approval. Step three: pick synthetic or conventional based on engine age, driving, and interval. Step four: grab the matching filter and the correct drain plug washer if your car uses one.

That is the whole decision. Marketing about racing heritage and mountain footage is optional reading. Your manual is the authority.

Change oil on a lift or ramps with the engine warm, not hot, and dispose of used oil at a recycling depot. Windsor has options; do not pour it down a drain. Good oil choices plus clean work habits keep engines quiet for years. That is the payoff for understanding the label.
